Doesn’t everyone want to be kinder to the environment, consume less pesticides and be hangover-free the morning after?

Well, whilst there’s no guarantee you’ll be without the epic headache, healthier options are more widely available in the wine department, so here’s what to look for…

Avoid sulphites by looking for ‘low-sulphur’ or ‘no-added sulphur’ wine…

Sulphur is a by-product of the fermentation process but extra sulphur is often added to maintain freshness for longer. Some people have no problems with sulphites, whilst others have quite severe reactions, ranging from rashes, flu-like symptoms and even asthma attacks!

Buy organic…

Studies have shown that liver function is significantly impaired when it to comes to processing the toxins found in pesticides. This reduces our ability to rid ourselves of waste and excess hormones resulting in that good old fashioned ‘hangover’ :-0

Not only are you being kinder to your body, but by investing in pesticide, fungicide and fertiliser-free wine, you’re also looking after the environment 🙂

Buy vegan or bio-dynamic…

Yes there is such a thing as vegan wine! Apparently, most wine is in fact filtered through fish guts and, in order to clarify your vino, egg and milk extracts are also used in the process :-0

Bio-dynamic wine takes organic farming to another level entirely (more spiritual if you like) and, is made using the principles and practices of biodynamic viticulture which are based on the spiritual and practical philosophy of the Austrian philosopher, author, social reformer, architect, and esotericist Rudolf Steiner.

Phew! – well I don’t know about all that, but I think I might need a glass of wine whilst I get my head round that one! Organic, vegan and bio-dynamic of course 😉

Vintage Roots stock a wide selection of organic, bio-dynamic and vegan wines in the UK and, apparently the Australian organic wine industry is just booming right now, so you should be able to source some at any good wine retailer.

Don’t panic if wine is not your thang; organic beer, vodka and whiskey are also now widely available 🙂
