As those long winter nights draw in and the northerly wind bites at my moisturiser-laden cheeks, I’m comforted in part, not only by the haul of French pharmacy beauty products that I managed to bag on my summer hols this year, but also by the fact that most of them are now avails over here – fabuleux! 🙂

Now, if you’ve never visited a French pharmacy before lemme tell you, it’s not all pile cream, mosquito repellent and paracetamol – they are quite something else when it comes to some of the best and most affordable beauty brands around. With over 23,000 pharmacies nationwide and their unmistakable neon green sign, French pharmacies are, to any self-respecting beauty geek, like kryptonite is to Superman – leaving you weak at the thought; and penniless on the way out :-0

What’s so different about French pharmacies?…

Whilst British pharmacists have a very high standard of education; training for 5 years in total before becoming fully qualified, French pharmacists train for between 6-9 years, including 1 year at a hospital and, are very often the first port of call over the GP for people seeking medical advice. However, it’s not just ingested medicines that they concern themselves with – they are also experts when it comes to skin health, which is where they have the edge over their British counterparts, who have historically been more focused on aesthetic products when it comes to the chemist’s beauty section. They’d do well to look at what’s going on over the ditch and, may even be able to take some of the strain that the NHS is under, were they to be the go-to for people who would otherwise be clogging up their GP’s waiting room…

So, what brands am I talking about and why?…

Skincare: Biotherm, Caudalie, Nuxe, Bioderma, Vichy, Darphin, La Roche-Posay, Eau Thermale Avène, Institut Esthederm, Elancyl, Odacité

Haircare: Phyto, Rene Furterer, Klorane, Leonor Greyl, Kerastase

These are all well-researched, science-based products, whose origins lie in plants or thermal spring waters and, are extremely efficacious at nourishing and caring for every skin or hair type. More importantly, they are mostly very well priced considering their heritage, which makes a refreshing change 🙂

Where can you buy them without having to go to France (although that would be quite nice)?…

Visit Escentual online or, The Garden PharmacyMadesil Pharmacie, Zest Essentials and John Bell & Croyden, all of which are located in central London. Escentual, The Garden, Madesil and Zest all ship internationally too – which is très bien for anyone in the Antipodes needing to get their mitts on some of those French beauty favourites!

Until next time beauties, au revoir…
