Lumity or lunacy? – do these little softgel capsules really contain an elixir that will re-energise your waking hours, provide restorative sleep, balance your hormones and plump out those wrinkles?

Lumity, which in astrological terms means pioneer or creator with a strong will and confidence, has gawn viral as they say, as one of the top 3 anti-ageing food supplements on the market. Soooo, 2 months ago, I thought I’d see what all the fuss was about and, given Yasmin Le Bon is their very well publicised ambassador, what did I have to lose in trying out these new wonder pills – after all, she doesn’t look too shoddy for 51! Lumity is said to be the first supplement that fights all 9 causes of ageing (who knew there were 9?! :-0) – a claim made by it’s founder, Cambridge University’s Dr Sara Palmer Hussey.

OK, so let’s put genetically blessed Yasmin aside for a moment and discover not only what those 9 causes of ageing are, but also what Lumity promises to do for the average mature consumer, with age-related concerns and sleep issues, like moi!

The 9 Causes Of Ageing (sciencey bit)…

Oxidative damage – One of the more well known causes of ageing; oxidative damage happens when free radicals, created as a by product through the air that we breathe, are allowed to roam around our bodies, damage our cells and cause a wide range of degenerative diseases. Enter antioxidants – these neutralise these free radicals and stabilise them ready for elimination. Whilst our bodies produce our own antioxidants, the levels that we are able to produce decreases with age so, Lumity has selected the most effective antioxidants available and offer them in truly efficacious amounts. Vitamins A, C and E, coenzyme Q10, zinc, selenium and the game changing l-cysteine, which strengthens our own antioxidant system.

Cellular energy decline – The mitochondria (the power-plants in our cells) provide energy by burning fuel in the presence of oxygen but as is the case with our friend oxidative damage, this process causes free-radical attack, and the mitochondria decline in numbers and efficiency with age. This leads to a chronic energy shortage and leaves the body vulnerable to disease and degeneration. Whilst the body can defend itself to a degree against oxidative damage, Lumity includes l-carnitine, coenzyme Q10 and magnesium to optimise mitochondrial health and function and, offer a new level of vitality.

Cellular debris – This is a result of mitrochondria decline (see above) and leads to poor detoxification, which in turn ages and degenerates our body as it functions less efficiently. Lumity includes acetyl-l-carnitine (found abundantly in red meat, which apparently we don’t eat much of these days) which enhances energy production, reducing debris and assisting the elimination process. Acetyl-l-carnitine is particularly effective in the brain apparently, making Lumity useful in increasing mental alertness, and fighting fatigue.

Glycation – Glycation is a natural process in which the sugar in your bloodstream attaches itself to proteins forming harmful structures that damage collagen and cause wrinkles and sagging skin – hence the current fixation with cutting out all sugar from our diet. It’s also thought to be implicated in diseases such as cancer, heart disease and Alzheimers. Our body does have it’s own defence against glycation, known as carnosine, but again, this declines with age. Lumity uses alanine, l-carnitine and l-cysteine to block glycation and protect and maintain healthy collagen and elastin, resulting in firmer, more youthful looking skin.

DNA damage – DNA instructs cells how to function correctly. In layman’s terms, damage to the DNA can cause cell dysfunction, accelerate it’s demise and cause cancer. Again, the body does have it’s own method of dealing with DNA damage but by further protecting and repairing the DNA with the inclusion of l-cysteine, turmeric and omega-3 fatty acids, Lumity ensures the cells can function correctly and are more resilient to disease and degeneration.

Telomere shortening – This is getting complex, so I’ll keep it brief! Every time a cell divides, its telomeres, the protective caps at the end of chromosomes, shorten. When telomeres become too short, the cell dies. The speed at which they shorten is indicative of the body’s rate of ageing. The body contains an enzyme, Telomerase, that helps maintain the length of the telomeres, so Lumity includes omega-3, fatty acids and vitamin D in order to support this function.

Inflammation – Chronic inflammation can result from a viral or microbial infection, environmental antigen (e.g., pollen), autoimmune reaction or persistent activation
of inflammatory molecules. The persistent low-grade attack on all body tissues caused by chronic inflammation precedes and characterises most degenerative diseases. It impairs the functioning and repair of tissues and cells and accelerates ageing. The effects of inflammation depend upon the ability of tissues to repair. For instance, cells with little to no regenerative capacity, including neurons, cardiac cells and skeletal muscle cells, would be especially vulnerable to the effects of inflammation. In contrast, and fortunately for us, skin cells continue to proliferate throughout life; so wounds to the skin are usually easily healed. Diets rich in saturated fats, trans fats and foods with a high glycemic index stimulate inflammation, which is why the advice often given is to adopt the Mediterranean diet – a diet rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and whole grains, all of which help prevent chronic inflammation. Lumity contains flaxseed oil and turmeric, as well as l-carnitine, coenzyme q10 and l-cysteine, which are all very effective anti-inflammatory ingredients.

Insulin resistance – Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas that lowers blood glucose by promoting its transport from the blood stream into the cells. Cells, in turn, use glucose as fuel to generate energy. Over-activation of insulin, due to the composition of our diets, makes cells progressively resistant to insulin as a form of self-protection against continual bombardment. If glucose is not allowed into the cells then it remains in the blood stream, which prompts the production of more insulin in a vicious cycle that exacerbates the problem. It also leads to increased glycation and cellular energy decline by stifling the fuel supply to the cell. Our bodies response to insulin resistance can lead to obesity and degenerative diseases so Lumity includes the most effective nutrients known to combat insulin resistance: l-carnitine and coenzyme Q10 help keep glucose and insulin levels in the blood lower. Omega-3 fatty acids, l-cysteine and magnesium are also included in Lumity’s ingredients which support the body’s response in fighting insulin resistance and the associated accelerated ageing.

Hormone decline – Repair and regeneration is essential to maintaining youthful health and appearance. In youth, a healthy surge of human growth hormone (HGH) released while we sleep takes care of all the repair, renewal and regeneration needs of the body’s tissues. However, as we age, falling levels of HGH correspond to a loss
of youthfulness and vitality and result in extra body fat, reduced muscle tissue, slow healing, lack of elasticity in the skin and reduced immune function :-0 Lumity’s combination of l-arginine, l-lysine and l-glutamine are the three amino acids taken before sleep that can help restore youthful levels of HGH release to give tangible benefits, including healthy, more youthful skin; healthy lean muscle; greater strength and endurance; a stronger, more responsive immune system; stronger energy levels, especially in the morning upon waking up; and improved mental clarity and alertness.

SO DOES IT WORK?

Lumity’s 2-step formula comes in two different bottles – one set of coffee coloured softgels for daytime use, and the other set of white softgels, to be taken at night.

I’ve written about my poor sleep patterns previously and, the various methods I’ve employed to catch more zzzzz’s, so Lumity night-time capsules were of particular interest to me. Whilst I had an initial, very positive response to this supplement, it didn’t seem that impressive during my first month. However, I am now into my second month and I am quietly optimistic about what these little white capsules can do for me on a long term basis – the quality of the increased sleep I do get, appears to be much deeper and as a consequence, I’m waking slightly less knackered and a little more energised – hallelujah to that! In addition to this, my pre-menstrual night sweats have decreased in intensity this last month, which alongside the marginally less severe cramps, is very encouraging. Restorative sleep also does wonders for your skin, as it’s more receptive at night during it’s reparative phase, to any products you might apply before bed 🙂

The daytime capsules haven’t seen much of an increase in my energy levels as yet, but I have definitely noticed a difference in the quality of my skin. It feels more hydrated and ever-so slightly plumper, with marginally reduced pore size and a decrease in the amount of pre-menstrual pimples! Someone even said that my skin was ‘glowing’ the other day, which was nice and, given I have not changed my skincare routine, I can only assume that it’s part of the ‘Lumity Effect’!

IN CONCLUSION…

Some folk might argue that we can get all the nutrients we need from eating a balanced diet and living a healthy lifestyle, which to a degree is true. However, it’s often difficult to know whether the food that we eat is as nutrient rich as it could be, owing to modern farming methods and, coupled with the stresses of our everyday lives, where absorption of these nutrients can sometimes be compromised, it can leave us nutrient deficient. Lumity claims to have carefully calibrated a formula of all the amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids you will need in order to counteract all 9 causes of ageing and, all well within recommended daily guidelines.

Most consumers of Lumity have found that the full range of benefits aren’t fully evident until the 2nd or 3rd month, so I intend to continue using Lumity for a little while longer so I can truly measure it’s efficacy – after all, I’ve spent years not sleeping properly and feeling permanently exhausted, so I’m conscious that this needs to be a long-term investment.
