Aaahh yes, the familiar red tube or tub of Lucas’ Papaw ointment is lurking in everyone’s bathroom cabinet isn’t it? If it isn’t in yours, then get yourself some quick sticks! This wonder balm, loved by celebrities and non-celebrities alike, has had a bad rap of late due to the fact that one of its staple ingredients is petroleum jelly (one of those nasties you should try to avoid in your skincare products). However, the company point out that the petroleum jelly they use as the carrier for their fresh fermented papaya is pharmaceutical grade, TGA, FDA and European Pharmacopeia approved and therefore not mutagenic or toxic in any way. Lucas’ Papaw won’t block pores or cause allergic reactions, but instead has anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties that have the ability to relieve and cleanse a whole host of minor cuts, burns, abrasions and insect bites. It’s also been reported to provide temporary relief for eczema and dermatitis sufferers and it works wonders on pimples and chapped lips too!
I slather it on my face as a protective barrier and to stop my skin from drying out when I swim 🙂
But as well as its medicinal properties, it’s the provenance of this product that’s really endearing – developed over 100 years ago by Dr T P Lucas, this company is still run by his direct descendants who lovingly peel the papaya by hand to ensure only the highest quality fruit is used, and all other ingredients and packaging are Australian grown and manufactured.

Good news for those of us in the UK – it’s now available here at The Paw Paw Shop, London
